Changes to the SAT/ACT requirement

Colleges all around the U.S had released the mandatory testings of the ACT and SAT due to COVID-19. However some colleges have reversed their decision and are now requiring these tests in order to submit an application. Here's what you need to know about it.

It's important to note that not all colleges have changed this rule, and some still no longer mandate the ACT and SAT. Many top schools are reinstating these exams in order to better assess a students readiness, and use them as another way to differenciate students applications. With more students applying to top colleges, and the acceptance rates getting smaller, admissions teams are looking for another factor to help their decisions.

Some colleges who are reinstating these exams include CalTech, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, MIT, and Georgia. Most of these colleges are implimenting this change in Fall of 2025, with the exception of MIT requiring the exams from Fall 2022. This means that juniors and seniors this coming school year should be preparing early for the ACT and SAT should they need or want to retake it later in the year, as well as the PSAT, which is a standardized test designed to help students get ready for the SAT in an official test setting.

If you're debating taking the ACT or SAT, remember that the vast majority of colleges still require these tests. And even if they don't, taking them can lead to scholarship opportunities not available to those who opt out of the tests.
