Should I take the ACT or the SAT?

Standardized testing season is coming up quick. We've gone over in a previous post the similarities and differences of the ACT and SAT, but is there one that is better to take over the other?

There are several facts to take into consideration if you're looking to take one over the other. While both are recommended, spacing out the tests can be a smart idea. This gives you time to study adequately for both without feeling stressed, and taking them early on gives you a good idea of where you lie on the scoring guide and can give you time to retake it if necessary.

Colleges overall favor the ACT over the SAT. this is because of the critical thinking and reasoning section that is not included in the SAT. While the SAT encompases math, reading, and writing, the ACT also includes a science portion of the test which analyzes a students critical thinking skills. This gives admissions teams a more accurate and well rounded application when applying. This being said, the SAT isn't something to push aside. Let's break down some ways to decide which test might be right for you to start with.

Play to Your Strengths

The SAT and ACT are different exams that host some similarities. If you haven't yet read our blog post about the differences and similarities of the tests, head over to see what you missed!

The SAT and ACT have similar sections, but place emphasis on different areas. For example, if you excel in math and are comfortable with more advanced topics like trigonometry and logarithms, you might prefer the ACT. The SAT has a stronger emphasis on algebra. But if you feel confident without a calculator, the SAT has a no calculator portion of the test.

There are many other slight differences like this that might help you build confidence early on in your testing. It's always best to continue to do research on which test you might think would benefit you more to start.
